Parents and students, I apologize for my delay in the Monday mail. As I always ask of you, students, own your mistakes. I did not take the time to publish my newsletter yesterday as I should have.
Parents: End of Year Conferences are on May 16th. This is an optional conference. Please let me know if you do not want a conference. Otherwise, I will put you on the schedule for that day.
WRAP testing begins tomorrow. Students are prepared and are going to do well. Please make sure that your child is in bed at a reasonable hour and has breakfast before school.
Here is more information:
The WrAP (Writing Assessment Program) is an assessment provided by the ERB (Educational Records Bureau) organization. The WrAP is composed of two, one-hour sessions given over two days. A prompt, along with suggestions for writing the prompt, is provided on the day of the assessment.
Reminder: Type to Learn through Lesson 24 is due May 19th.
Reader's Workshop:
Unfortunately, scheduling got in the way and we did not finish Wonder. We are reading diligently between speakers, resource classes, and testing to finish this week. In addition, some students are continuing to meet at lunch for book club "chat and chew". I will be offering another selection of book club offerings in historical fiction for those that may be interested.
Our main focus continues to be on test preparation for reading comprehension and vocabulary.
Math:
Unit 11 is coming to an end. Students will complete a review and check it on Thursday. Today, we spent time looking at the vocabulary on the study guide. As previously stated, the written assessment will be on Friday morning before the field trip.
Students made a "Gallon man" or Gallon fish" today to help visualize the measurement conversions for cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. This is in their homework for reference and studying.
Students should be memorizing inches to feet to yards, millimeters to centimeters to meters or any combination of.
An End-of-the-year math review will be handed out this week. The assessment will be given next week before students take the math section on the ERBs.
Social Studies:
We are making our way through the Southern Colonies. It has been a slower study than I would like. Hodgetown continues to be a focus during Library time and at home. Students are finishing up the paper doll that represents their job in the colony. Some students have already begun filming and all students will have completed filming by Friday. Paper dolls are due by Friday. Look for information coming soon about the ribbon cutting ceremony.....
Word Study:
Today, we reviewed the meaning of the prefixes re-, un-, dis-, pre-, mis-. Students will complete more practice this week with applying REVLOC and the test will be on Friday.
Writer's Workshop:
I did not assign a weekly writing assignment this week because of the WRAP. Last night, students completed prewriting on a topic and I used it for teaching purposes only. They will not be completing a draft or published piece on this topic unless they personally want to.
Test preparation continues this week as well in Writing. We have finished writing concepts and skills prep and will review next week before that section of the test.
