Writer's Workshop
Students began typing their pieces over the weekend. Most people finished typing the original draft and early editing today. I talked with the class last week about the due date being flexible since we have taken a lot of time to edit after the different lessons. I wanted the students to do all work and editing in their Writer's Notebook before typing. I told them that as long as they have kept up with the editing work, they will have plenty of typing time to get their piece published. The due date is no longer tomorrow and will be determined after the Conclusion lesson tomorrow.
The students have put a lot of time into improving this first piece of published writing. We will spend this week on final revisions and publishing. The students will then share and turn in.
Social Studies
There has been a change this week. The Explorers test has been pushed back. We have just gotten into this unit and the study guide will be handed out tomorrow. We have studied The Vikings and many more explorers to follow and learn.
Math:
Unit 2 is complete and the test will come home this Friday in folders. Attached will also be an error coding guide that the students complete as they view their graded test. Unit 3 begins tomorrow. This unit covers multiplication and division number sentences, as well as Algebra. It is important that your child practicing their multiplication facts weekly if they do not know them automatically.
Word Study:
The students again did SOS strategies on their PSW words. I have encouraged them to do this again at home tonight as they review the spelling of these words. Tomorrow is the PSW assessment. Sort 3 will also be handed out tomorrow. This sort is more challenging than the first two. Students will have to determine when adding a suffix to the root word if the final consonant should be doubled, whether or not to drop the -e, or do nothing to the root word.
Reader's Workshop
Book clubs started today! The students have their book and we spent a good amount of time create goals for the next book club. This round of book clubs will meet on G, B, and D days. Students will always have a club goal for the next meeting day. Students will apply the character lessons in their book clubs, as well as our previous work on envisioning, retelling, point of view and story elements. The reading for book clubs does count towards the 30 minutes.
