It was great to see so many of you at chapel last week. I am so proud of the Easter chapel that the students presented last week. They worked very hard and really took an interest in making this chapel special and successful. I have uploaded some pictures and encourage you to send me any more that you many have. I have also included the link to the video on YouTube that Mrs. Chang took.

Math:
Students took a pretest for Unit 10 today. This will allow me to focus on the skills that each individual student needs to focus on. Also, I will just do a quick review of concepts that students have mastered. Setting up the unit this way allows for individualized instruction, more enrichment work, and more small group work with Ms. Knight and I.
Unit 10 focuses on: using a transparent mirror, lines of reflection, lines of symmetry, frieze patterns, and positive and negative numbers.
Writing:
Students are spending the next two days gathering research about whether or not chocolate milk should be served in schools. On Thursday, they will state their claim and flashdraft their piece. Over the next two weeks, students will have lessons
Word Study:
Sort 13 was introduced today. This sort focuses on Final –Y, -EY, -IE & -Y + Inflicted Endings.
The noticings for this unit will be:
Y Rule – *vowel –y = no change when adding suffix
*consonant –y = change –y to –i when adding a suffix except when adding –ing
b. A final –y usually makes a /ē/sound when it is in the unaccented syllable of a two syllable
word. Examples: bod y, jour ney
c. A final –y usually makes a /ī/ sound if it is in a one syllable word or if the final –y is in
an accented syllable. Examples: sky, re ply
In addition, students will be learning specifically about REVLOC. This will also be glued into their word study notebooks.
REVLOC
Each syllable in a word can be broken down and
categorized by this mnemonic.
R - R-controlled (car, fern, merry, earth)
E - Magic E (bike, cake, Pete, poke)
V - Vowel Team (boat, eight, meet, monkey)
L - Consonant + le (bubble, candle, staple, steeple)
O - Open (go, she, open, table, *among)
C - Closed (cat, bath, pump, stop, *ton)
*Both open and closed syllables can make a schwa
sound.
