What are Grammar Givens?
The Grammar Givens are the expectations for what students must know in grammar and mechanics by the end of each grade. The following is the compiled list of Grammar Givens for K-5.
Kindergarten
By the end of kindergarten, students will:
· Capitalize their own name.
· Name and recognize end punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation mark).
· Name and recognize nouns (person, place, or thing).
First Grade
By the end of first grade, students will:
· Omit random capital letters within words.
· Capitalize “I” and names of people.
· Use beginning sentence capitalization within editing period.
· Use ending punctuation within editing period.
· Include spaces between words.
· Name and recognize action verbs.
Second Grade
By the end of second grade, students will:
· Capitalize the first word in a sentence, months, place, cities, and states.
· Use ending punctuation.
· Include commas in lists and dates.
· Name and recognize adjectives.
· Use apostrophes in contractions.
Third Grade
By the end of third grade students will:
· Use correct capitalization with proper nouns: (holidays and product names).
· Include commas in greetings, closings, and numbers.
· Use commas and quotation marks in dialogue in editing phase.
· Name and recognize pronouns and singular possessives.
· Form and use regular plural nouns.
Fourth Grade
By the end of fourth grade students will:
· Capitalize cardinal directions and titles.
· Use commas and quotation marks to mark direct speech and quotations from text.
· Use a comma before a coordinating conjunction in a compound sentence, introductory phrase, appositives, and in a series of words/phrases.
· Use a semicolon between two simple sentences.
· Name and recognize plural possessives, adverbs, and conjunctions.
· Form and use irregular plural nouns.
Fifth Grade
By the end of fifth grade students will:
· Use correct capitalization.
· Produce complete sentences, recognizing and correcting inappropriate fragments and run-ons.
· Use punctuation (commas, parentheses, dashes) to set off nonrestrictive/parenthetical elements.
· Use correct verb tense and subject-verb agreement.

Writers - Keyboarding Practice
