A few reminders:
- Boys are now allowed to wear shorts.
- Our class will host Easter chapel next Wednesday, March 23rd. I would plan to be in the chapel by 8:15
- St. Patrick's Day NUD on Thursday
Math:
Unit 9 focuses on fractions, decimals, and percents. Students will learn how to convert fractions to decimals and percents using a calculator. Also in this unit, multiplication and division of decimals will be taught.
Writing:
Today, students began thinking and writing on Should we have Daylight Savings? Each student stated their claim and came up with reasons to support their claim. Then, they spent 5 minutes in a caucus to strenghten their reasons. Tonight and tomorrow, they will be doing a flashdraft on the prompt. I told studetns that this is not a published piece, but a draft to work with. They can even set a timer and solidly write for 30-45 minutes. This flashdraft is due Wednesday.
Today, the students took notes on how to set up and use boxes and bullets in their writing. This will be used for the final piece and I encouraged the students to use them in all argument writing pieces.
Social Studies:
We are continuing our Colonial studies and learning about The Middle Colonies. Because of our upcoming chapel, students will be doing some reading and note-taking at home to keep us moving forward.
Reading:
Our read aloud of Wonder started back today. Students are having some thought-provoking discussions during our reading.
Students met in book clubs today and will meet again on Wednesday. I am challenging students to think beyond the basic words of the text. Social issues bring out many thoughts, discussions, and emotions and I want students to pay attention to these and stop and think about them. Upcoming lessons will be about tracking a character's desires, problems that stand in the character's way, and how characters react to the problems.
Word Study:
Sort 12 will be introduced tomorrow. This sort focuses on unaccented syllables.
